Did You Know Each Of Us Has A “Window Of Tolerance”?

Updated: Dec 4, 2024

Your window of tolerance represents the range where you feel balanced, present, and able to handle life’s ups and downs without feeling overwhelmed or disconnected. Within this window, you’re able to stay calm, grounded, and connected with others, making it easier to navigate emotions and daily challenges.

However, when life gets intense, stress can push us out of this window. When we exceed it, we may go into one of two states:

Hyperarousal –

This is the “fight or flight” response. Signs can include feeling anxious, irritable, or overwhelmed, where it feels like you’re on high alert.

Hypoarousal –

This is the “freeze” response, often causing numbness, withdrawal, or a sense of shutting down when things feel too much to cope with.

The goal is to expand our window of tolerance over time. Practices like breathwork, meditation, and self-care routines help us build resilience, allowing us to stay within our window more often, even during stressful times. At Soulstar, we’re passionate about helping you discover tools to widen this window, bringing more peace and balance into your life.

Curious about ways to find and expand your window of tolerance?
